Share Allsky camera via FRITZ!Box on the Internet

myFRITZ!LogoI use the indi-allsky software for my Allsky camera (more information here!). There have been very rare occasions when my camera has stopped responding – and of course you want to be able to look at last night’s images when you’re out and about. allsky-rodgau.de does offer a live image, but not such an extensive archive as the software. That’s why I found out how to access the camera from “outside”.

I use the integrated tools of my FRITZ!Box for this – depending on the version, the names in the FRITZ!OS may differ slightly.

Step 1: Set up myfritz.net account

MyFRITZ! is a free service from AVM that gives you secure remote access to your FRITZ!Box via the Internet. You can use it to access your Fritzbox from anywhere in the world via smartphone, tablet or PC. All personal data remains stored exclusively on your FRITZ!Box and is not transferred to external services.

You need:

  • A FRITZ!Box with the latest FRITZ!OS
  • A valid e-mail address
  • Your Internet provider must assign your FRITZ!Box a public IPv4 or IPv6 address.

To set this up, open the user interface of your FRITZ!Box in the WLAN or LAN at home at http://fritz.box or under the correct IP address with your browser.

Under Internet > MyFRITZ! account, enter your e-mail address, confirm it by clicking on the confirmation link and then go to“Register your FRITZ!Box“. After confirmation, you will be redirected to myfritz.net. There you can log in with your e-mail address and the MyFRITZ! password you have assigned. If you do not yet have a user account in the FRITZ!Box, you will be asked to create one to enable remote access.

If everything went well, your FRITZ!Box can then be accessed at [your-cryptic-URL].myfritz.net. The cryptic URL is displayed by the Fritzbox under Internet > MyFRITZ! account.

Further information and detailed instructions can be found on the official AVM website: AVM

Step 2: Set up myFRITZ! sharing for the Allsky camera

In the next step, we need to set up the Allsky camera. We use the myFRITZ! service for this.

First navigate to Internet > Shares > MyFRITZ! shares and click on “New share”. Enter a name (e.g. “Allsky camera” and select https:// as the scheme. Enter the port via which the service can be reached – in this case 443 for HTTPS. Activate the share and click on“Apply“.

If your Allsky camera is accessible in your local network at allsky.local, you should now be able to find it on the web at https://allsky.[your-cryptic-URL].myfritz.net.

You can read here how to secure the installation with a “real” SSL certificate – because indi-allsky uses a self-signed certificate, which is not prescribed as secure by common browsers.

You can also use your own subdomain – you can find out how to do this here!
