Hello, I’m Stefan!

Even as a child, I was fascinated by looking at the night sky. Astronomy has always been a silent companion for me – a subject that has never quite let go of me. However, I came to the subject of all-sky photography and all-sky cameras more by chance. A mixture of curiosity, a love of experimentation and the desire to make the sky over Rodgau‑Weiskirchen (Germany) permanently visible gradually turned into a thoroughly ambitious project. Me and my ambition and so…

Professionally, I work in communications, but privately my heart has always been in gadgets and IT. I used to be passionate about experimenting with Linux systems, tinkering with hardware setups and testing open source tools. Today, this tinkering is an important part of my Allsky project: from the Raspberry Pi configuration, sensors and optics to individual scripts, automations and customizations in indi‑allsky.

My current setup is based on a Raspberry Pi 5, a high-quality camera with fisheye optics, a DHT22 sensor and a weatherproof, modified housing from Deep Sky Dad. Thanks at this point to Pavle Gartner from Deep Sky Dad for the ingenious housing and greetings to Slovenia!

The software runs on Raspberry Pi OS with indi‑allsky, which I have extended for my workflow. Greetings go out to Aaron W. Morris for the ingenious software and the help on Github!

Allsky-Rodgau runs on WordPress with a modified theme – the original theme is called Kawi and is by Vincent Dubroeucq. I use a few self-written WordPress plugins to display the live images from the camera – these are automatically transferred via FTP from the indi‑allsky environment, then compressed using a WordPress plugin and made available here.

Apart from that, the Allsky scene is a real global community and that’s what makes it so appealing to me. People all over the world are developing hardware, software and ideas – openly, collaboratively and across all borders. Today in particular, this network impressively demonstrates the value of shared knowledge, active exchange and technological openness. Allsky photography connects – and perhaps I can play a small part in making this connection visible with my Allsky project.
